Stress: Quite often it is not the
unexpected crisis which causes the most stress in our lives.
It might be long-term anxiety over illness, family relationships
or problems at work. Sometimes we have a general feeling
of stress which doesn't seem to have specific cause. We
may feel anxious or uptight and don't know exactly why. This
vague, uncomfortable feeling of stress may includes the feeling of
having too much to do and not enough time to do it all. The fear
of mixing with people or of being alone, and of not being able to think
clearly or to tackle the work at hand.
Depression: Because the
word depression is used in so many different ways, it is important to
distinguish between passing moods of sadness or frustration and a
permanent depressive attitude to life, or serious depression, both of
which needs some sort of help or treatment. The
central characteristic of severe depression is a state of mind where the
self seems worthless, the outer world meaningless and the future
hopeless.
Childhood Abuse: All child abuse
is abhorrent. As children we are dependant,
inexperienced, vulnerable, trusting, sensitive. Any
kind of abuse we suffer as children has a profound effect on the way we
think and feel about ourselves, about other people, and about the world
around us. We carry our childhood beliefs with us
into adulthood where these beliefs have a huge and enduring impact on
our lives.
Loss & Bereavement:
Loss can be caused by many different events, for example:
-
Loss
caused by being deprived of home, family, rights, support, freedom
etc
-
Loss
caused by feelings of inadequacy, not measuring up, high
expectations, failing to achieve goals, loss of friendships etc
-
The
highly personal and perhaps inexpressible meanings associated with
past and present losses in our own lives. Loss caused by the
death of someone dear to you and our inability to cope with such a
loss.
As
a therapist who counsels the bereaved and acknowledges the role of loss
in a persons life, Jan has obtained valuable insight from intensive
research as well as her own personal contact with loss. She has a
warm empathic nature and is well qualified to impart an understanding of
the many layers that grief can unfold within the mind as well as the
heart.
